World Book Day

World Book Day.
Oh, now this is one of my favourites.
But tell me ... could you pick a single book as a favourite ? I couldn't . its like trying to pick a favourite chocolate bar!
I have different favourites from different authors, from different times at my life, from different genres ..
I think I could probably narrow it down to a top five of favourite books ... but I'm sure I'll miss something out.

Lets give it a try.

The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis.
Oh, I loved the TV adaptation of this and had to buy the book. and then I realised it was part of a set. And then I fell in love with Narnia. 30 years after reading if for the first time it still gave me the same feeling when I read it again recently. I always wanted to be Lucy Pevensy!!

Little Women. by Louisa M Alcott.
Now, I pushed against this book. I didn't want to like it. I read it as part of studying Children's Literature with the Open University. I was dreading reading this book. I thought it hard going and difficult. And then, all of a sudden .. it wasn't. I was interested and I started to care about what happened.

Malory Towers by Enid Blyton
Okay, so technically its a set of six books. I loved these books. Full of lacrosse and midnight feasts and Gwendoline Lacey! I wanted to go to Malory Towers almost as much as I wanted to go to Narnia.

Reaper Man by Terry Pratchett.
The first Discworld book I read.. and I was hooked. Oh the imagination of this man. From this one chance reading, I followed the adventures of Death, Sam Vimes, and Nanny Ogg. Its almost impossible to pick a favourite of TP's books. A truly fantastic writer.

The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley.
Flavia de Luce is one of my all time favourites. An 11 year old girl with a passion for chemistry and mysteries.

Well, there's a  list of five.
I'll go away and think of books  that I should've included, shake my head that I have forgotten others ...
drop me a comment about your favourite book. are any of mine on your top five list ?

Fantastic February.

Happy February !

Time for February trivia!!

So, February.
Thanks to Google, I'm full of trivia!

Probably the best known face about February is that it only has 28 days. That's unlucky for those who are born on a leap year! Coming round every four years they make "actual" birthdays even more special.
The next thing February is most well known for? Well, hearts and flowers and of course .. St. Valentines day!
For more information about St. Valentines day, click here

Lets talk gemstones!
The gemstone usually associated with February is Amethyst . This gorgeous stone is said to represent  piety, humility, spiritual wisdom, and sincerity.
Did you know, it was thought by the ancient  Greeks to prevent drunkenness! They carved drinking vessels from it, in the belief it would help keep them sober.

From gorgeous gemstones to fabulous flowers ..
Flowers associated with February are the Violet and the Iris.

Zodiac.
People born between the 20th January and 18th February are born under the sign of Aquarius. Those born 19th February and 20th March are Pisces.

I hope you found that interesting - pop me a comment to let me know.

Are You Tidy?

Are you a tidy person?
Do you clean as you go? do you have a list of jobs that get done regularly?
Or do you have .... a messy inbox??

Okay, I can see the look you are giving me .. I had the same look when I saw this for the first time.

Apparently, its Clean out your inbox week. This runs from today, 22nd, to Saturday 26th.
You know, I can see the use of this week. I'm always losing emails. I think "oh, I'll keep that there" and then... well, I just cant find it.
I'm guessing that how you want to interpret "clean out" can vary. For me, I'm reading this as go through, delete delete delete (I'm feeling a bit like a Cyberman!!) get rid of anything you have read and dealt with.
But it can mean, unsubscribe from those random emailing lists you joined. Or maybe open up new folders for different subjects ... get the inbox clean and tidy and have everything hiding in happy little folders.
Unless your inbox is exceptionally untidy (I'm not looking guilty, honest!) I don't think you'll need a week to sort it out.
You know, I'm growing to like this idea ... a tidy inbox is a happy inbox?

I'm even thinking you can have a "clean out your ..... " week for whatever you fancy.

I'm off to have a look at how untidy my inbox is ... if you come up with other "clean out your....." ideas, pop me a comment to let me know.

Happy Birthday !!

Happy Birthday to A.A. Milne!

Today is Winnie the Pooh Day, celebrated each year on the birthday of author A.A. Milne. Did you know that Winnie first appeared in 1926??
Along with friends Tigger, Kanga, Roo, Owl, Eeyore and Piglet, Winnie the Pooh lives in Hundred Acre wood, and has some wonderful adventures, with all of the friends working together. Sometimes with the help of Christopher Robin, who was based on Milne's son.
While most of us have a favourite character (mine is Tigger, I love his bounciness)not all of us have read the stories.
Thanks to Disney, this isn't a problem, as there have been a range of films, and lots of "Pooh Bear" goodies are available.
If you are able to, a great place to visit on Winnie the Pooh day is Pooh Corner, the house in Hartfield, East Sussex where A.A. Mile wrote the books.
If you cant make it to East Sussex, how about a teddy bear picnic? Take your favourite cuddly and head out to the woods - don't forget the honey sandwiches.
And if you live near a stream with a bridge ... then how about a game of Pooh sticks. ?

Monthly Musings ..

Happy January!

I'm hoping this will be a regular little slot.
A little bit of information about the month. Useless trivia as my kids would call it.

So, January.
Well, after a quick Google, I'm full of amazing facts!
In Latin, the word for door is ianua as January is the doorway to the new year and new beginnings, this has become January. The Roman god Janus is also associated with January, as the god of beginnings and transitions. Janus also has two faces, one looking to the old year and one looking to the new.
It is also the coldest month of the year - and ideal time to buy yourself some lovey cosy clothes, how about hand knitted socks ?

Lets talk gemstones!
The gemstone usually associated with January is Garnet. This represents constancy and is believed to keep the wearer safe when travelling.
Did you know, Garnet comes from the 14th century word gernet meaning dark red!

From gorgeous gemstones to fabulous flowers ..
Flowers associated with January are Carnations and Snowdrops.

Zodiac.
People born between the 22nd December and 19th January, are born under the sign of Capricorn. Those born 20th January to 18th February are born under the sign of Aquarius.

I hope you found that interesting - pop me a comment to let me know.

Happy New Year!!!!

Happy New Year!
2019.
Well, the Christmas tree isnt quite put away, and the Lego display isnt packed away ready for later in the year just yet.  I'm a little behind my normal schedule.
I know its not totally traditional, but I like to start the new year clean and as tidy as I can.
Like with everything seasonal, its very much personal taste.

But that's enough of 2018!
What are your plans for 2019? World Domination? a Holiday? a New Hobby?
I always start the year full of brilliant plans (usually for the Christmas Lego display to be honest - plans for 2019 have started already) and while some are carried out, quite a few fall by the wayside.
I'm not a big fan of "resolutions" they make us feel bad if we don't reach them, and  where's the fun in that?

This year I'm planning to use my gorgeous new planner (ohh, its so pretty, currently clean and tidy) I'm going to write all my business plans in it and really stick to them. Normally I use a notebook for random thoughts .. and then lose it - I drew some cushion cover designs in a notebook last week ... now I cant find the book! My gorgeous planner was designed by Nicola Smith, of a Handcrafted Business (you can find her website here).

So, now I have the planner, what's my next plan? Well, this fabulous blog!
I'm going to be writing a couple of times a month (more if I get over excited) about various different things. I've got a few good ideas (written in my planner) up my sleeve.

And of course there are lots of new exciting things happening at Created by Lisa HQ. I've got some brilliant ideas for new cushion covers, - when I find the notebook!

So, whether you have resolutions, general plans, or no idea what you are going to do in 2019, let me wish you and yours a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year xx
